Common Errors

Posted on February 25, 2013 by scott in Uncategorized No Comments

¡Hola a todos!

Quiero repasar algunas cosas primero.

Let’s review a few of the homework submissions. We’ve received thousands of them, and we’ve identified several common errors that almost everyone can learn from. I´ve made three videos to go through these errors, categorized as word usage, pronunciation, and gender/number of nouns.

Word Usage:

Unintroduced nouns usually use hay (just like there is/are in English)

Hay doesn’t need definite articles (el/la/los/las) – just like there is/are in English

Some prepositions need de, and some don’t:

Need de Don’t need de
Al lado de

Arriba de

Debajo de (coloquial: abajo de)

Cerca de

Detrás de

Atrás de

Encima de

En medio de

Fuera de

A

Bajo

Sobre

Entre

Con

Desde

Hacia

Hasta

Sin

Pronunciation:

The gu and qu + e/i (soft vowel sounds) sound like English g and k, they don’t get the u sound

Here is each combination:

gue -> gay

gui -> gea (as in gear)

que -> kay

qui -> ki

The ll sound makes a y sound:

Ella -> eya

Other Pronunciation: use Instreamia hover sounds to work on words you aren’t sure about!

Gender of Nouns:

Use Instreamia to look up gender of nouns (la pared, las flores)

Always use the right article and the matching adjective.
