Okay, so during this hangout, you’ll practice describing what you devote yourself to and describing yourself using gustar, and encantar.

Part I – Everyone share their likes and desires (Assignment 2) in Spanish (30 minutes)

This is pretty simple, everyone in the hangout will share their likes and desires. If you need to use your assignment 2 and read from it, that’s fine. If you can do without it, that’s even better!

Here are a few questions you can use to ask other people more information if they don’t say it:

¿A qué hora te levantas?

¿Dónde trabajas?

¿Qué te gusta cenar?

¿Por qué quieres estudiar español?

¿Qué te gusta comer?

¿Qué te gusta hacer?

Practice asking about each other

Just like we did for the last hangout, you can ask questions about other group members! This is great practice for matching verb conjugations with the correct subject. Use the questions from above to ask about each others’ routines.

Here are the instructions (same as last week)

For example, let´s say we have 4 people in our group: John, Sue, Bob, and Robin

John would ask Bob: Bob, ¿Cuántos años tiene Sue?
Bob would either answer:

“Sue tiene 20 años. “
OR

No sé. ¿Sue, cuántos años tiene?
After Sue answers “Tengo 20 años”, Bob would say to John,
“John, Sue tiene 20 años”

Next, it´d be Bob´s turn to ask someone else a question. Then you´ll go around the room asking each other questions about each other, until everyone has had a chance to ask and answer a question.

Note: This isn´t the time to get everything perfect correct or to stress about it. If you notice someone making a mistake, kindly correct them. More than anything though, just get comfortable trying to put sentences together.

Part II – Practice Making Sentences

It seems like most people didn’t get to do this in the hangouts, so I’m adding it to this week’s hangout too.

I made a little chart to facilitate this next exercise. It may seem silly, but here’s how it will work.
Sentence Making Chart

Robin gives Bob a subject and a verb, and Bob has to make a sentence. For example, Robin gives Bob “Nosotros” and “Comer”.

Bob creates the sentence “Nosotros comemos postre.” Then Bob gives a random subject and a verb to the next person, until everyone has had a few tries forming sentences.

Okay, so during this hangout, let’s practice introducing ourselves and using some simple verbs.

Part I – Everyone introduce themselves in Spanish (15 minutes)

You´ll start out sharing basic information.

This is pretty simple, everyone in the hangout will introduce themselves. If you need to use your assignment 1.1 and read from it, that’s fine. If you can do without it, that’s even better!

Here are a few questions you can use to ask other people more information if they don’t say it:

¿¿Cómo te llamas?

¿De dónde es?

¿Dónde vives?

¿Cuántos años tiene?

Practice asking about each other

Okay, now you´re going to practice asking questions about other people in your group.

For example, let´s say we have 4 people in our group: John, Sue, Bob, and Robin

John would ask Bob: Bob, ¿Cuántos años tiene Sue?
Bob would either answer:

Note: This isn´t the time to get everything perfect correct or to stress about it. If you notice someone making a mistake, kindly correct them. More than anything though, just get comfortable trying to put sentences together.

Part II (15 min)

The Summer offering of SpanishMOOC 100 is here! We’ll get started June 3.

Watch the trailer!

The first offering was a huge success with nearly 4,000 students! To provide the best experience possible, future offerings will include a modest enrollment fee. In appreciation for expressing your interest in future offerings of SpanishMOOC, we are offering you a 50% discount on our Spanish 100 course.

There’s no better time to learn Spanish, and no better way! Here’s what just a few of our students have said:

Patches said:

I’m so encouraged working on this today. I can actually hear some of the words in the songs without repeating them over and over and over.

Something about this system, of listening, reading, etc. to them is really helping me.

Thank you so so much for this course! It is a blessing.

Shelby said:

I took spanish in high school and failed miserably – I have learned more in lesson 1 than I had learned in a whole year of high school spanish, I especially enjoyed the music videos It really made it a lot of fun for me, I also like that I can go back and practice as much as I want .

Michael said:

Watching and listening to the videos was terrific. Exposure to the different genres (and accents) such as contemporary songs, short stories, talks etc. made it enjoyable and I learnt many new words or words used in ways I wasn’t familiar. I also think is a good way to gain a better understanding of Hispanic culture around the world.

Read more Student Comments…

We’re also excited to offer a much improved experience over our initial course, and we hope to have you join us. Here are a few important improvements we’re making:

Compensated Graders: The individuals who have been so kind as to offer their time to help others learn Spanish will be given compensation for their efforts. This will allow us to attract many more graders, and grading on SpanishMOOC will be a priority in their busy schedules, so the students will receive feedback on their submissions no more than 3 days from the submission date, and usually within 24 hours.

Office hours and real-time discussions – You’ll have a chance to meet with with graders, teachers assistants, and teachers in real-time discussions. These sessions will be broadcast, indexed, and made available for later viewing.

Employment of Teacher’s Assistant(s): The workload for reviewing content and producing high-quality learning modules, as well as technology review and student relation management will be distributed to teacher’s assistants.

Development of Grammar Principle Index with @Tagging: Before the next offering begins, students will be able to see a Khan-Academy-Style list of all the grammar principles created on Instreamia, and teachers/graders will be able to link to them (e.g. @ser_estar) within comments, so when they correct homework or introduce topics, they can direct learners to the necessary principle(s).

Development of Hangout Scheduling, RSVP, and Reminders: We’ll be adding a set of of features to simplify and empower the hangout process! We know how important conversation practice is, and this development will make it easier than ever to find other learners

We offer two courses:

Spanish 100 – Starts June 3rd – $99 x 50% off (this week only!) = $49 - Enroll now!

Learn

As shown below, you’ll participate in many activities during SpanishMOOC that will teach you Spanish. You’ll improve your listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills and get feedback from real teachers and native speakers to give you the same quality education you’d find at a college or university.

Practice & Review

Within Instreamia, you’ll take practice CLEP tests, and you’ll get to review each question and its answer, to make sure you understand every question. Teachers and language coaches will help you with any points you find difficult or don’t understand. The tests will resemble the actual CLEP test.

Take the proctored CLEP test at your testing center

Once you’ve passed the practice test, you’ll go to your local testing center. They will proctor the 90-minute test, and your results will be sent to your college and they’ll award you college credit.

Welcome to Spanish 100!

This is a 12 week undergraduate-level course for students with no background in Spanish to communicate through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This open course will create and provide resources reusable under creative commons standards. Students will be expected to dedicate 6 hours per week, for a total of 72 hours. Although the course cannot provide college credit from an accredited university, capable students will learn the material of a first-year college class, and will receive a letter grade.

The course will be a combination of recorded video instruction, conversation practice with other students, and homework assignments given and evaluated through the integrated Instreamia learning platform. In these assignments, students will practice listening recognition, vocabulary understanding, context comprehension, and grammar usage.

Assessment criteria for the determination of each student’s letter grade will be self-paced module completion, 10 homework assignments, conversation participation, 10 quizzes, 2 midterms and a final.

After completing this course, students will be prepared with the basic skills of speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish in order to communicate with native speakers. The basic grammar principles, including verb conjugations, article usage, and pronoun usage will be introduced. Students will learn the culture of Spanish-speaking countries through videos and conversations. Students will be prepared for second-year college level programs if they receive a satisfactory grade in this course.

The primary course facilitator will be Scott Rapp. Scott has has lived abroad in Honduras and taught Spanish to adults at Brigham Young University’s language training center. He has also developed blended learning solutions for language acquisition. Learners of this course will learn from interactive exercises based on real native content through social media and online video.

Here are the grade weights:

20% – Free response assignments (10 assignments)

20% – Instreamia Participation (15% assignment completion and 5% progress points)

20% – Conversation participation

20% Quizzes

20% Tests

Objective: Be able to say where you’re from.

Task Requires: 1-2 hours

Topics: Present Tense, Ser, Estar

Let’s learn another important question for introducing yourself:
¿De dónde eres?
This translates to: From where are you, or Where are you from?
de – from
dónde – where
eres – you are

To answer it, you’d say: “Soy de ___(place)___”.
soy – I am
de – from

Soy and eres both come from the same verb in Spanish: Ser. It’s a very important verb!

Let’s learn how it is conjugated.

Now you can start to notice it in some other videos! You’ll also work on present tense conjugations.

Bienvenidos! Welcome to the course! We’re really excited to have you along.

We’ll be using the Instreamia learner methodology for this lesson, so if you haven’t heard of it, you might want to check it out here. You also may want to do the 15-minute Instreamia tutorial here.

Before we go any further, I want to introduce myself. As you watch, don’t worry about understanding everything. Feel free to read the translations as I speak, and just watch the video through once and try out the interactive subtitles. We’ll work on learning what I’m saying later on.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/view

Now, we’re going to see what you already know. Don’t worry about your score for this part – it is just a way for Instreamia to evaluate your starting point.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5WBY78mZrU

Here, you’ll try to fill in the blanks to make sentences that describe the video you just watched. It’s only a few questions, and you aren’t expected to know them all!

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365790/learn/Flashcard-Comprehension/

Okay, now you’re going to have a chance to try out some of the exercises that help you learn the content in videos, just like you learned about in the Instreamia tutorial.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Live-Listening

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Flashcard-Listening

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Flashcard-Reading

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Flashcard-Production

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Live-Reading

Hopefully, by learning the individual words, when you watched the video the last time, you were able to understand more than the first time you watched it.

We’re going to start getting into some grammar principles now, but before we do, I want to explain what I call the language learning passport – a place where you can keep and organize notes about what we learn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba6p_2SzKpQ

The starting point for Spanish grammar is the subject pronouns. Be sure you get some notes about this in your passport! Watch this video explaining the subject pronouns, with these details:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgymIyaNlZE

The subject is the person or thing doing the action

In Spanish, using the subject is optional if it is previously introduced. (The subject pronoun is usually only used to emphasize the actor)

You can almost always infer the subject just by looking at a conjugated verb (we’ll practice in a bit)

Every verb in Spanish must be conjugated according to the person (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) and the number (plural or singular). Gender doesn’t matter.

This video will help solidify the concepts explained and how the tree chart relates to usage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_9f1fVBvm4

This is a common question for introductions:

¿Cómo te llamas?

It literally translates to “How do you call yourself”

cómo – How

te – you/yourself

llamas – you call

To answer it, you’d say: “me llamo ____”

me – me/myself

llamo – I call

We’re going to keep learning from a few more introductions, where you’ll increase your vocabulary and your listening skills. Since you’re just getting started, don’t worry if you can’t hear every word and answer all the questions correctly. Remember, you can repeat each sentence several times, and a score of 60% is great for a first-time learner.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89154/learn/Flashcard-Listening

I know it can be challenging to listen to native Spanish speakers, but you’re doing great

Did you use this form: “me llamo Juan?” If so, great job! Let’s learn why this is correct, and “me llamo es Juan” would be incorrect.

Week 1
Lesson 1
Module 1

Bienvenidos! Welcome to the course! We’re really excited to have you along. Before we go any further, I want to introduce myself. Since I’ll be doing so in Spanish, we’ll be using Instreamia – this interactive learning platform. As you’ll see in a minute, Instreamia enables beginners like you to understand people speaking in foreign languages, by giving you interactive subtitles (you can hover over words and click on them) which are highlighted when someone speaks. We’ll go into more detail in a minute, but for now, go ahead and click Play Video. As you watch, don’t worry about understanding everything. Feel free to read the translations as I speak, and just watch the video through once and try out the interactive subtitles. We’ll work on learning what I’m saying afterward.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/view

Okay, I hope you enjoyed hearing my introduction in Spanish. (If you can’t access the video for any reason, let me know). Hopefully the subtitles and translations helped for you to understand some of my phrases. If you didn’t understand everything, don’t worry! We’ll work on getting you to understand next.

Module 2

Now that you’ve seen a little of how Instreamia facilitates understanding Spanish, let’s let it teach you. The next task is to watch the same video, and this time use it as a listening exercise. Instreamia will have you fill in the blank for words, so you can practice listening and identifying words. Listen to the video and participate in the listening exercise.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Live-Listening

Great job! You are starting to train your ear on how to hear and understand Spanish. You’ve got a long way to go, but each exercise brings you closer to learning Spanish.
Module 3

Now that you’ve practiced listening for a bit, let’s work on learning some of the words in this same video, since you’ll need to learn them for the speaking practice. For this exercise, Instreamia will have you guess the meaning of some words. When you see a word highlighted, choose the correct English translation for it.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Live-Reading

Excelente! You’re doing great! Now that you have an idea of how the integrated learning platform works, you can learn from our first native speaker, or should I say singer: Laura Pausini.

As you learn from this video, focus on hearing the words and being able to read along with the text. Don’t try to understand everything! You can repeat sentences if you’re not able to fill in the blank on your first try by clicking the play button.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/328788/learn/Live-Listening

Okay, now that you’re on boarded to Instreamia, and welcomed to the class, let’s talk a bit about what this class is and how you’ll be evaluated. The following video will explain what to expect:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ifpzv9PGeiA

Learning a language is a life-long pursuit

There’s no finish line, fluency is a mile marker on the path

This course will start you along the path

Any measureable progress will be rewarded

You can receive points for making progress in whatever way you like

You can retake evaluations as many times as you like

You can come up with your own ways of demonstrating skills

You can receive more than 100% of possible points if you surpass learning expectations

You can learn principles (and receive credit) not on the syllabus

Alright, so now that you know what to expect out of this course, we can jump into the course material.

Module 4

The first thing you’ll learn is pronunciation. This set of videos will teach you rules for the correct pronunciation of each letter in Spanish. As you watch, pay special attention to the five vowel sounds since in Spanish they never change. You can watch or rewatch these videos as many times as you like, and afterward you should feel comfortable with the rules for pronouncing each letter.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/79921/view

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/88272/view

http://instreamia.com/videos/89153/view

http://instreamia.com/videos/331862/view

Module 5

Okay, now we’d love for you to get some practice hearing pronunciation from more native speakers. For this section, you’ll use the “Listening” exercise to work on hearing specific words and identifying them correctly. For this exercise, don’t worry about the meaning of what they’re saying. Just focus on the letters and the sounds that combinations of letters make.

This will introduce you to the most common words first – Instreamia emphasizes learning the common words early on, then it works you up to more difficult words. Agian, you’re not expected to understand all the words or be able to keep up with comprehension, only listening and pronunciation.

If you want to watch the videos without the exercise enabled, just click View Only from the exercise settings on the right.

Here are the videos to practice with:

http://instreamia.com/videos/324751/learn/Live-Listening

http://instreamia.com/videos/90602/learn/Live-Listening

http://instreamia.com/videos/77158/learn/Live-Listening

Also, if you click the “Explore” tab above, you can browse and find your own favorites.
Module 6

The last part will be learning some of the most common words you’ll need for your introduction, and for Spanish in general. You’ll work on some of the same words you’ve been hearing in the other exercises.

This first one is just a simple flashcard-type exercise where you’ll be given the word in Spanish and have to guess what it means in English

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Flashcard-Reading

Now, do the Live Reading (where you answer as the video plays) for this video, which is a compilation of student introductions, then you’ll do flaschard reading for it too.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/363315/learn/Live-Reading

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/363315/learn/Flashcard-Reading

And finally, do this exercise where you’ll have to spell out some of the words from my introduction. To do this exercise, click the letters in order (for example, to spell maestro, you’d have to choose the pieces mae-str-o in order. You can use the keyboard and just type the word.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Flashcard-Writing

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/363315/learn/Flashcard-Writing

That’s it for the Lesson 1! Bien hecho, y felicidades por llegar hasta aquí!
Extra Mile

In Spanish, adjectives can be modified using special endings, like -ito, -ote, and isimo. Watch this video about these endings, and when you do your introduction, add two additional sentences to your introduction using adjectives with these endings.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/338080/learn/Live-Listening

Lesson 2
Module 1

¡Hola de nuevo! Welcome back.

We’re going to learn a lot of new material today too, but before we jump into that, let me explain the progress review functionality built into Instreamia.

To get to the progress tab, click on the progress button in the top bar.

Once you’re in the progress tab, you’ll see the progress that you’ve made in the last thirty days. Part of your grade is determined by these progress points, which you accumulate each time you watch a video or answer a question correctly.

You should also see three indicators that show how many words you need to review – every time you log back in, you should practice the concepts that need review. Go ahead and do this now if you haven’t already.

Below that, you’ll see a cloud of words that you’re currently learning – and you can hover over them or click on them to see translations and information.

Instreamia keeps track of every concept you’re learning, and it uses Spaced Repetition to make your time reviewing as effective as possible. A good starting point would be to review your pending items twice per week.

We also want to be sure you’re continuing to learn about introducing yourself and understanding others’ introductions. So, learn from these podcasts whose recordings have been made possible by the Open University.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89154/learn/Live-Listening

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89155/learn/Live-Listening

Module 2

Now that you’ve learned pronunciation and practiced introducing yourself, we can move on to learning grammar principles. We’ll learn the subject pronouns and the structure for verb conjugation, as well as the rules for the present tense regular verbs. Watch this video explaining the subject pronouns, with these details:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgymIyaNlZE

The subject is the person or thing doing the action

In Spanish, using the subject is optional if it is previously introduced. (The subject pronoun is usually only used to emphasize the actor)

You can always infer the subject just by looking at a conjugated verb (we’ll practice in a bit)

At this point, you should memorize these subject pronouns and their corresponding parts of the tree chart:

Singular: yo, tú, él ella usted

Plural: nosotros, vosotros, ellos ellas ustedes

Now it’s time to learn about verb conjugations. This video explains:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvJ7zxvy3fQ

infinitive means the root word. In English, we would say “to talk” is the infinitive.

all infinitive verbs end in -ar, -er, or -ir

to conjugate, remove the last two letters and add the correct ending

Different tenses have different endings

Spanish has a lot of irregular conjugations, or spelling changes

Alright, now that you’ve learned how it works, it’s time to try it for yourself! This exercise will be easy if you memorize each of these endings:

-ar verbs (o, as, a / amos áis an)

-er verbs (o, es e / emos éis en)

-ir verbs (o, es, e / imos ís en)

This exercise will have you fill in the blank with the correct conjugation for the verb in the present tense. You’ll have to look at the translation to know which subject pronoun to use, for example, if the translation says we read, you’d have to use nosotros.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89154/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351150/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89155/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation

Module 3

Great! I hope you’re starting to feel comfortable with subject pronouns and present tense conjugations. Before you start another exercise, check out this simple way to lookup the verb charts for any word:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lQZ-FxhQ4g

Okay, now on to the next practice. During this exercise, you will do a mix of three question types – Live Listening, Live Reading (both of which you’ve seen) and Live Subject Recognition, which is new!

When you get that question type, you’ll choose the correct conjugation for the subject pronoun given in parentheses. As you do the exercise, you’ll notice that for some verbs the spelling changes. For example, these verbs change to have a y at the end for the yo conjugation:

Ser -> soy
Ir -> voy
Estar -> estoy

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/324751/learn/Live-Recommended

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/347650/learn/Live-Recommended

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/79905/learn/Live-Recommended

What other spelling changes did you notice? Irregular verbs in Spanish happen to be some of the most important ones, so we’re going to discuss two of them now, and we’ll come back to more later on.

Module 4

Now we’re going to learn about two of the most important verbs in Spanish: Ser and Estar. They both mean to be, but their usage is varied – we’ll get to that in a minute. First, let’s take a look at the conjugations of the verb ser:

Singular (soy, eres, es)

Plural (somos, sois, son)

And the verb Estar:

Singular (estoy, estás, está)

Plural (estamos, estáis, están)

Great, now you’re ready to have a native speaker teach you about ser and estar – mostly through examples. You’ll first watch the video with the mixed exercises, then you’ll learn what some of the verbs mean in flashcards, and finally you’ll try to conjugate the verbs yourself.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/347140/learn/Live-Recommended

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/347140/learn/Flashcard-Reading-Verbs

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/347140/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation

Module 5

You’re doing great. Now it’s time to drill some verbs in the present tense. Since you’re just getting started, this exercise will be all multiple choice. You’ll work on three skills this hour:

Listening (filling in the blank from listening)

Reading (Guessing the best translation for words)

Present Tense Conjugations (Guessing the correct subject pronoun and guessing the correct conjugation)

Here is the list of videos and exercises: (Again, you might not be able to understand all of what is going on)

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/324751/learn/Flashcard-Reading

Module 6

If you haven’t already noticed, learning a new language is more than just learning what each word means, since no two languages have a word-to-word lineup. There are dozens of synonyms with different connotations in any language, and the way words are assembled varies from language to language.

Another part of speech that has a lot of differences from English is the preposition. Prepositions link words together and form prepositional phrases. If you’re not too familiar with the concept, you might want to review it here.

Spanish has its own list of prepositions that don’t necessarily correlate to the best English translations for each. For example, en can sometimes mean in or it can mean on… It can even form parts of phrases where English would use at or there would be no preposition at all.

Unfortunately, as with most concepts, there’s no silver bullet for using prepositions correctly in Spanish. It just takes a lot of practice, and you’ll eventually be able to feel what’s right. Mastering prepositions is a long road, but let’s get started by introducing a few.

Here, you’ll work on this video., you’ll learn words to it, through a few exercises. Not all the words will be prepositions, but many will be.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351162/learn/Flashcard-Listening

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351162/learn/Live-Reading

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351162/learn/Flashcard-Writing

Assignment 1 and Extra Mile 1
Additional Study
Week 2
Lesson 3
Module 1

You’re doing great; I know we’ve been working really hard to learn as much grammar as we have in the first week, so great job to everyone for focusing and getting through it. I promise, building on a foundation of grammar principles like we’re doing is the way to go, and it’ll make for a faster and more effective path to fluency than spending your first moments memorizing phrases you don’t understand.

Now it’s time to learn about a core feature of the Spanish language – the gender of nouns. You’ve heard the phrase that the adjectives must agree in gender and in number at least once by now, so let’s watch this video that explains the rule a bit more.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351163/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351163/learn/Live-Reading

Okay, now that you’ve learned the rules, it’s time to practice. Sometimes these ones will have you use some of the special endings, so we’ll have you review that principle first.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/338080/learn/Live-Reading

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Flashcard-Adjective-Agreement http://www.instreamia.com/videos/338080/learn/Flashcard-Adjective-Agreement http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351163/learn/Flashcard-Adjective-Agreement
Module 2

Okay, now we’re going to work on our pronunciation. We learned about the letter sounds last week, so now we’re going to learn the rules for emphasis and review accent sounds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOyP_cBOIdU

In this one, we’ll practice together. This is the same method I’ll have you do on your own afterward, which is to identify the emphasis on every word as you read it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i55aqe1BLd0

Okay, now that you’ve seen me do it, you can try! Instead of just watching these videos straight through, first read aloud each subtitle, trying to correctly place the emphasis like I did in the above video.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365624/view
Module 3

Alright, now we’re getting to the point where you have enough basis in Spanish to be able to understand an entire conversation of full-speed, natives talking to each other! This set of exercises will walk you through learning words, including their meaning, what they sound like, and how they’re properly conjugated in the present tense.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365624/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365624/learn/Flashcard-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365624/learn/Live-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365624/learn/Live-Listening/

Did my prediction come true? Could you actually understand them, even without reading the translation? If you’re not quite able to understand everything just yet, you can come back after a bit more practice next week and try again.

Module 4

Okay, let’s get back to learning about the present tense. One of the uses for the present tense is to describe routines, which is what we’re going to learn about now. You’ll learn from me and a series of native speakers describing their routines, as well as describing people.

http://www.instreamia.com/all/learn/Flashcard-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Live-Readinghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Flashcard-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Flashcard-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Writing-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Writing-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/all/learn/Writing-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation/
Module 5

Okay, let’s talk about how you say that you don’t do something in the present tense. This is actually really easy in Spanish, just add the word “no” just before the conjugated verb. If your sentence has an explicit subject, it’d go between the subject and the conjugated verb. I’ve recorded some examples.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351169/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351169/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351169/learn/Flashcard-Regular-Present-Tense-Conjugation

Great, time for another song that uses this principle. This song is pretty slow, so you should be able to listen to each phrase. It also repeats a lot, so with the help of the translations you should be able to understand what´s happening.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351137/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351137/learn/Flashcard-Reading
Assignment 2
Assignment
Note: We highly recommend using a program like Microsoft Word to write in Spanish. It will correct spelling and some grammar mistakes, and allow us as graders to focus on more important feedback like meaning and word use. You can also use this site for free. As a result, we’ll be deducting more points for misspelling words that these tools detect.

This assignment is to practice prepositions, which is the last module in Lesson 2! Your assignment is to describe this room, like the native speaker did to teach you prepositions.

Your assignment should describe the locations of at least 12 things in this room.

Extra Mile
Note: We highly recommend using a program like Microsoft Word to write in Spanish. It will correct spelling and some grammar mistakes, and allow us as graders to focus on more important feedback like meaning and word use. You can also use this site for free. As a result, we’ll be deducting more points for misspelling words that these tools detect.

This extra mile is worth up to 5 points.

The extra mile is to describe a scene using up to 8 sentences.

This assignment is to write out your routine and a personal description, which we went over a bit in Lesson 3!

The extra mile is to describe a scene using up to 8 sentences.

For your assignment you should use at least 8 present tense verbs to describe things you do regularly.

You should also mention at least 4 things about you, like where you live, your physical description, age, or your personality.

Week 3
Lesson 4
Module 1
Alright, time to take a step back from grammar rules for a bit and learn numbers. Here is a native speaker recording that will teach you all the numbers you’ll need in a few short minutes. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351165/learn/Live-Listening/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351165/learn/Live-Reading/ That wasn’t so bad, was it? Here’s a fun song (it’s for kids) to help you learn the numbers one through ten. Children’s Song for Numbers 1-10 http://www.instreamia.com/videos/88877/learn/Live-Listening/ And here is the next video in our series of Ceci and Sara, asking for a phone number: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365646/learn/Live-Listening/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365646/learn/Live-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365646/learn/Flashcard-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365646/learn/Flashcard-Writing/
Module 2

Let’s learn our next topic: possession. First, let’s focus on possessive adjectives and pronouns.

Watch this short video introducing the possessive adjectives:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZlsmESZxN8

Possessive Adjectives describe nouns

English Equivalents: my, your, his, her, our, their

Since they are adjectives, they must agree in gender and number

Singular: mi(s) tu(s) su(s)

Plural: nuestro/a(s), vuestro/a(s), su(s)

Su is extremely ambiguous, it can mean his, her, your or their.

Module 3

Now we’ll go through a quick overview possessive pronouns:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvKl7fspZNU

Possessive pronouns take the place of nouns

The ending [o/a(s)] corresponds to the noun the pronoun is taking the place of

They usually come at the end of the sentence in both English and Spanish

English equivalents: mine, yours, his, hers, ours,

Singular: mio/a(s), tuyo/a(s), suyo/a(s)

Plural: nuestro/a(s), vuestro/a(s), suyo/a(s)

Suyo/a(s) is extremely ambiguous, it can mean his, hers, yours or theirs.

Okay, now you should have a background understanding of these words. Here is a drill to help you memorize them:

Possessive Adjective and Pronoun drill Link

Module 4

It’s time to learn how to talk about what is happening. We call this the present progressive tense, and it corresponds to the English construction to be + verb + ing. Here’s a breakdown of the present progressive in Spanish:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ_jp_E3pRQ?

Use it to describe things that are happening right now

Start by conjugating the verb estar in the present tense

For the action, remove the ar or er/ir ending, and add -ando or -iendo

There are a few irregulars, but not too many

Here’s a bit of practice:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bOAg_pMUSA
Module 5

Okay, let’s take a break from learning new concepts and review some of the ones we’ve already learned.

This video describes some cultural details of Honduras. I’ve created it using mostly the present tense, so you should be grammatically prepared to understand it. There will be a lot of new vocabulary to learn as well, so I’ve created some exercises to help you deepen vocab.

http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365647/learn/Live-Listening/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365647/learn/Live-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365647/learn/Flashcard-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365647/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation/
Module 6
You have been working hard and learning a lot! Let’s have a break from spoken and conversational content, and let’s study from songs for a bit. Some of these you’ve seen before, are you getting any closer to understanding them? http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351152/learn/Live-Listening/http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351131/learn/Live-Recommended/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/328788/learn/Live-Reading/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/347650/learn/Live-Reading/
Lesson 5
Module 1

Now for the tricky part of possession… This concept is difficult for many English speakers to grasp at first, but practice makes perfect, and you’ll get plenty. Watch this video on expressing possession without adjectives or pronouns:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5KdqlHLdM8

The concept of apostrophe + s to express possession (e.g. John’s) does NOT exist in Spanish

All possession must be expressed like this: John’s Book = The Book of John

Always use the format Possessor + de + thing being possessed

Okay, all the possession concepts

clearer after hearing a few dozen examples. Listen to our native speaker introduce these concepts and go through our examples:

http://instreamia.com/videos/348013/learn/Live-Listening http://instreamia.com/videos/348013/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://instreamia.com/videos/348013/learn/Flashcard-Production http://instreamia.com/videos/348013/learn/Flashcard-Writing
Module 2

Let’s take a step back and make sure you understand some of the concepts we’ve covered. Try to fill out this worksheet from memory.

If you can’t fill it out, you’ll need to work on each of the concepts. We have covered all of these in the first 4 lessons.

Review Worksheet

Our friends at the University of Minnesota have made this website with many of the grammar principles we have covered (and even more we haven’t yet covered):

http://www.carla.umn.edu/strategies/sp_grammar/index.html

Here are a few of the ones we have covered:

Module 3

You’re doing great; let’s see some of the principles and words that you’ve learned in some native content.

http://instreamia.com/videos/336357/learn/Live-Reading http://instreamia.com/videos/336357/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://instreamia.com/videos/336357/learn/Flashcard-Production http://instreamia.com/videos/336357/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Live-Listening http://instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Flashcard-Production http://instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Flashcard-Writing
Module 4

Okay, let’s learn about another important verb in Spanish: Tener. Tener usually expresses possession, and can also be used to describe attributes (e.g. Ella tiene pecas –> She has freckles), as well as indicate age (Nosotros tenemos 27 años –> We are 27 years old). When tener is used with the word que, it indicates a need to do something (e.g. Tengo que ir al doctor –> I have to go to the doctor). Let’s learn the conjugation first, then learn more and solidify these principles by learning from our native speaker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K1mRNO_Gik

http://instreamia.com/videos/365720/learn/Live-Recommended

Strengthening Exercise:

Okay, now time to practice. Here’s another video that you should follow along with and speak out loud.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YySNc3KpXeg http://instreamia.com/videos/365720/learn/Flashcard-Production http://instreamia.com/videos/365720/learn/Flashcard-Writing
Module 5

Okay, now that you’ve got a basis for Spanish, how things work, and you’ve made a few small paragraphs for yourself, it’s time to put some organization around what you’ve been studying. In this short video, I’ll introduce what I call your Spanish Passport, which is a little organized notebook.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba6p_2SzKpQ

It doesn’t matter what you use for your notebook

Try to keep each concept we go through organized

Write down grammar explanations in your own words

Make a page for each principle we cover

Start with a few example sentences from videos you see, and add to them every once in a while

Here is a little list of principles you should put into your Spanish Passport (you don’t necessarily need a page for each one, but that may be a reasonable starting point):

Pronunciation: Vowels

Pronunciation: Consonants with special Rules

Pronunciation: Letters I struggle with

Pronunciation: Rules for Emphasis

Present Tense: regular -ar verbs

Present Tense: regular -er verbs

Present Tense: regular -ir verbs

The present progressive tense

The verb Ser

The verb Estar

The verb Tener

Articles in Spanish

Rules for masculine and feminine nouns

Adjective Agreement

Possessive Adjectives

Possessive Pronouns

I’ll use this symbol and let you know when I think it is a good idea to add another page to your passport from here in.
Module 6
Your assignment this time is going to be to describe people, so these exercises will help you get the vocabulary and grammar down so you can write your own descriptions. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365695/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365695/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89154/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89155/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Flashcard-Productionhttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351136/learn/Flashcard-Present-Tense-Conjugation
Week 4
Lesson 6
Module 1
Alright, now for the last lesson of unit 1! You’ve done great to get this far, so congratulations! Of course there is much more to learn, but you should feel great about the accomplishment you’ve made. Now we’re going to learn about ir, a very important verb which means to go. Let’s start off by learning the conjugation with a couple examples in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmWjhjKZ1bY Now let’s practice a bit with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=003jz45rPOg Okay, now you’re ready to learn about the different uses from a native Spanish speaker.http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366017/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366017/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366017/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366017/learn/Flashcard-Writing

Questions in Spanish ALWAYS have ¿ to indicate to the reader when the inflection should change, followed by a ? at the end of the sentence. When there is an interrogative word, it is right before that. You have probably already seen most of these in the short conversations and quizzes we’ve done so far, so the best way to become more familiar with them is to hear them in a few more conversations. We’ll have a few short conversations about a few pictures in this next exercise. You should be able to understand them with the help of the translations and Instreamia context tools.http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366337/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366337/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366337/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366337/learn/Flashcard-Writing One other important note about these words is the use of que es vs. cual es.
“¿Qué es (son)…?” is used to ask about the dictionary definition of something. Here are some examples:
¿Qué son tamales? (What are tamales) : Tamales son maiz molido… (explanation of tamales)
¿Qué es contradecir? (What is contradict?) : Contradecir is decir algo al contrario… (explanation of contradecir)

¿Cuál(es) es (son)…? is used to ask about a particular attribute or specific instance of the thing.
¿Cuáles son tus tamales favoritos? (What are your favorite tamales)
¿Cuál es el edificio más alto de Nueva York? (What is the tallest building in New York?)
¿Cuál es un problema que Honduras enfrenta? (What is a problem that Honduras faces?)
Module 3
Okay! Time to take another break from learning new principles and deepen your vocabulary and listening skills. These videos are still to complex to be able to understand completely, but work on identifying the words Instreamia quizzes you on and trying to learn those. With each correct answer, you come closer to understanding the video.

Module 4
Now we’re going to learn about the verbs gustar and encantar. This video will explain what they mean and how the Spanish grammar construction works for them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml2YFp-4vzc And here’s an opportunity to practice for a bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4rACB4qPUo Now here’s a video all about what Juanes likes: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366345/learn/Live-Listening/ http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366345/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366345/learn/Flashcard-Production
Module 5
It’s time to really work on some production! These exercises will help you review many of the videos you’ve learned from so far, and help you memorize the words and phrases used by our native speakers. This is going to be a challenge, but it will also help you really get it down and prepare for the test.http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365646/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365646/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365656/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365656/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365667/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365624/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89154/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89155/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/331863/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351169/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351162/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writinghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/347140/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing
Week 5
Lesson 7
Module 1
You survived the first test! Congrats, and great job on making it this far. I want to start out this unit with a bit of exposure to what we’ll be covering next – talking about the past – while relying primarily on what you learned in the first unit.
We’re going to hear a bit more from our storyline with Sara and Ceci. They’ll use the past tense for just a bit, so don’t worry about learning those conjugations just yet, but try to understand what is going on. This will be a great chance to work on conversational contexts, which is often significantly different from narratives and songs. Also, check out the comments! I’ve left a few notes on some of the sentences where the constructions or phrases are of interest. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366628/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366628/learn/Live-Readinghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/366628/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366628/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366628/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366629/learn/Live-Listeninghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/366629/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366629/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366629/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366630/learn/Live-Listeninghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/366630/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366630/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366630/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366630/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing
Module 2
Okay, now let’s deepen your understanding on some of these topics. Here you’ll do a lot of the exercises you’re familiar with – like reading, writing, and verb conjugation for the present tense. I’ve also mixed in some other videos that you haven’t seen before so the exercises don’t become too monotonous and you can see more in context. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351149/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351149/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351149/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351148/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351148/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351148/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351148/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351139/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351134/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351134/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/338701/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/338701/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/336381/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/336381/learn/Live-Reading
Module 3
Alright, onto a new grammar principle! We’re going to learn about the present perfect tense. This tense is used to say what you have done in the past. We’re going to start out with a video that explains the rules for this tense. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhqBY3Tb-L8 Conjugate Verb Haber: Singular: he, has, ha Plural: hemos, habéis, han Note: This is the same verb that has the special conjugation in the present tense “hay”, meaning there is or there are. Use with past participles: Regular –ar use –ado (e.g. hablado) Regular –er/ir use –ido (e.g. aprendido) Examples: Yo he hablado (I have talked or I have spoken) (nosotros) Hemos ido a Costa Rica (We have gone to Costa Rica) Let’s learn from a set of questions and answers using the present perfect: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366625/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366625/learn/Flashcard-Listeninghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/366625/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366625/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366625/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366625/learn/Live-Reading In Spanish, this construction is used less frequently than in English. Here are several examples of translations of English that don’t use the present perfect tense: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366627/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366627/learn/Flashcard-Productionhttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/366627/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366627/learn/Live-Reading
Module 4
Now we’re going to learn about another important verb in Spanish – hacer. It roughly translates to do or make in English, but it has a few constructions that are entirely different, like whether and time since something happened. Let’s start by learning the present tense conjugation in this video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XSPFlNTUYM Hacer has a few different uses – first, it is used to express action, or the creation of something. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366622/learn/Live-Listening Another use is to describe weather (hot, cold, windy, sunny)http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366624/learn/Live-Listening The third use is one of the most difficult for foreigners to grasp – using it to express the passing of time, sometimes where we’d use “ago” in English. We use the third person singular (hace in present tense) with the amount of time that has passed. Here are some examples: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366623/learn/Live-Listening Now let’s have you practice with these for a bit to help it sink in. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366624/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366622/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366623/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366623/learn/Flashcard-Advanced-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366622/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366623/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366623/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366624/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366624/learn/Flashcard-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366622/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366624/learn/Flashcard-Writing
Week 6
Lesson 8
Module 1
It’s time to learn about another tense in Spanish! Hopefully you’re becoming more familiar with the present tense and feel confident with its uses. We’ll continue to deepen understanding of the present tense more, and also study its irregular conjugations soon. The next tense we’re going to learn about is one of two past tenses, and it is called the preterite. In English, this corresponds to our “-ed” words for most cases – especially when describing discrete actions. Just like in English, there are a lot of exceptions for the conjugations, so we’ll also go through some of the most common ones in this lesson, but first let’s learn about the normal –ar and –er/ir conjugations. Be sure to write these in you Spanish Journal! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLvuvnWugpI -ar verbs: Singular –é, aste, ó Plural – amos, asteis, aron -er/ir verbs: Singular – í, iste, ió Plural- imos, isteis, ieron Conjugation of hablar, escribir, comer Now here’s a little practice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lVcn0L-bq4
Module 2
Now you can learn from one of our volunteers from Spain! Javier is going to share his experience about visiting another country, and he’ll use all regular preterite verbs to do so. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366571/learn/Live-Recommended http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366571/learn/Flashcard-Reading-Verbs http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366571/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366571/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366571/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366571/learn/Flashcard-Preterite-Tense-Conjugation/ As tends to be the case in Spanish, the most common verbs for the preterite tense are the irregulars! In this next video we’ll go through the conjugation of the verbs ser and ir, which confusingly enough, have exactly the same conjugation in the preterite tense. The only way to tell them apart is context! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1PSMZncdsY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fMmTVSCGxk
Module 3
Here’s a little lesson on Instreamia to practice: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366739/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366739/learn/Flashcard-Preterite-Tense-Conjugation/ Now we’ll tell you about our trip to Costa Rica, and a bit about the culture and we’ll share with you a few pictures from our trip. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366707/learn/Live-Reading And here a a few songs that use the preterite. A few of the verbs are irregulars we haven’t looked at yet, but you should be able to figure them out and begin to understand these videos! This should be another exciting moment that you begin to feel like you can understand this native content, since we’ve now gone through enough grammar to be able to grasp what is being said, with the help of the subtitles and translations. If you come across some sentence that you don’t know how to get back to the translation, leave a comment and we’ll get you there. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/207675/view http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351155/view http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351146/view http://www.instreamia.com/videos/207675/learn/Live-Listeninghttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/351155/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351146/learn/Live-Listening
Module 4
Now it’s time to learn about the “a personal” in Spanish. When there are two people in one sentence, sometimes it can get confusing which is the subject and which is the object (the doer [subject] vs. the recipient [object] of the action)! To overcome this challenge, the rules of Spanish dictate to use “a” just before the object when it is a person. I’ll explain this a bit more thoroughly in this video.
*Note, I made two mistakes I need to correct in this video:
1) I should have had “Mi hermano le escribió una carta a Julia.” in the third sentence
2) In the examples, the fourth sentence should read “En las mañanas, mi papá le canta ___ mi mamá.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoecm_jyCG0 Now it is time for you to practice! In this exercise, choose whether each blank should have an a or nothing. “A personal” Practice Here are the answers: “A personal” Practice Solutions And the answers in Instreamia so you can study from them: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366615/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366615/learn/Flashcard-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366615/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366615/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366615/learn/Random-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/366615/learn/Random-Preterite-Tense-Conjugation
Module 5
You’ll need to practice these A LOT before they start becoming familiar to you, so you’ll go through some drills in a minute. Before you do these drills, I want to mention four patterns that some irregular verbs use.
We’ll start with three present tense irregular patterns – these ones are sometimes referred to as “stem changers” because when the emphasis is on the stem of the verb (the part before the er/ar/ir ending), the vowel sound changes.
First, learn about e -> ie ones in this short video:

E -> IE Stem Change

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeDS7jmneSY
• Tener (tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen)
• Querer (quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren)
• Cerrar (cierro, cierras, cierra, cerramos, cerráis, cierran)
• Venir (vengo, vienes, viene, venimos, venís, vienen)
• Entender (entiendo, entiendes, entiendes, entendemos, entendéis, entienden)
• Pensar (pienso, piensas, piensa, pensamos, pensáis, piensan

E -> I Stem Change

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtmLc8sXEYA
• Pedir (pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís)
• Decir (digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen)
• Medir (mido, mides, mide, medimos, medís, miden)
• Seguir (sigo, sigues, sigue, seguimos, seguís, siguen)

O -> UE Stem Change

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9ECAJsK0EI
• Mostrar (muestro, muestras, muestra, mostramos, mostráis, muestran)
• Recordar (recuerdo, recuerdas, recuerda, recordamos, recordáis, recuerdan)
• Costar (cuesta, cuestan)
• Poder (puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden)
• Jugar (juego, juegas, juega, jugamos, jugáis, juegan)

Now for the preterite one. This is an important pattern, and it is also challenging, so you’ll need lots of practice!

Preterite U Stems

– Notice that these change the emphasis to the second-to-last syllable instead of the last! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR_01xPWiYI
• Tener (tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron)
• Poder (pude, pudiste, pudo, pudimos, pudisteis, pudieron)
• Estar (estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvisteis, estuvieron)
• Poner (puse, pusiste, puso, pusimos, pusisteis, pusieron)
Module 6
Okay, now you’re ready for some drills! You’ll drill on the present, the preterite, and some vocab for each of these videos: Be sure to look at whether Instreamia is asking for the Present or the Preterite! <a Week 7
Lesson 9
Module 1
Now it’s time to learn about objects in Spanish. Whereas the subject is the performer of an action, an object is the recipient of an action (direct), or the recipient of another object (indirect). We always use the object pronoun for first and second person, and we use it to replace the noun after it has been introduced for 3rd person. There are three sets of object pronouns that we’ll be learning – direct, indirect, and reflexive. Here are the sets:

Here’s a video that walks through this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwzqH5FFUiw You probably noticed that the 1st and 2nd person object pronouns don’t change! That makes it easy for those ones. You’re probably also noticing the (se) in parenthesis for indirect – we’ll come back to that in a bit. First, I’ll explain these pronouns and their use and placement in the sentence.
Module 2

Sentence Placement Rules

There are four rules for placement of object pronouns in the sentence. This is a somewhat complicated concept, so be sure to take your time with it and take notes in your journal! Here is the video for this section (the text accompanies it below): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_QEWL1SNfo

1. When used with a conjugated verb, the pronoun goes JUST BEFORE the verb.

Me voy a bañar.

¿Has visto mis anteojos? Sí, los vi ayer en la mesa.

¿Quieres comer mis papas fritas? Sí, las voy a comer.

¿Dónde nos vemos?

Te amo.

2. When used with an infinitive, the pronoun GETS ATTACHED TO the end of the verb.

(Note, when you have a phrase with an infinitive and a conjugated verb, you get to pick – either is correct!)

¿Dónde puedo comprar zapatos? Puedes comprarlos en el centro comercial.

¿A qué hora vas a irte mañana? Voy a irme a las ocho, tengo que levantarme a las siete.

¿Quieres comprarle un regalo a tu hermano? Sí, voy a comprarle un reloj.

3. When used with an affirmative command or gerund, it GETS ATTACHED TO the end of the verb.

(notice that the location of the emphasis doesn’t change, so they add written accents where necessary)

Báñate ya, que ya nos vamos.

¡Consígueme una manzana por favor!

¡Abrázame por favor!

Tenme esta mochila un segundo.

4. When used with a negative command, it goes JUST BEFORE the verb.

¡No me digas!

No te emociones mucho.

¡No te vayas!

Necesitas tu computadora mañana, ¡no la vayas a dejar aquí!

Module 3
Let’s review a few videos about routines that used a few reflexive verbs. Can you tell why these verbs are reflexive? Can you identify the object prounouns? http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Live-Listening http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Flashcard-Productionhttp://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Random-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/89460/learn/Random-Preterite-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Random-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351173/learn/Random-Preterite-Tense-Conjugation
Module 4
Okay, now let’s practice using object pronouns. In this video, we’ll practice some object pronouns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYxlQjQeFrY
In this video we’ll choose the correct object pronoun and setence placement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n87BpitPq5k Now it’s time for you to try it out for yourself! As indicated at the top of this PDF, you are to fill in the blank with the correct object pronoun(s). Each blank will be filled in.
Indirect and Direct Object Practice
Here are the answers in PDF: Indirect and Direct Object Practice Answers
Module 5
You may have already noticed that the other common past tense in Spanish – the imperfect – is almost inseparable with the preterite. The imperfect is used for indefinite past actions, whereas the preterite is used for completed actions. This video will walk through a few of the uses and rules for which tense to use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FpxcsJ0JNo

Preterite

Imperfect

Completed actions – had definite beginning and/or end
Storyline verbs
Things that happened

Actions that are ongoing or not finished
Verbs that set the scene
Describe the surroundings
“Was _____ing”
“Used to ____”
Give context to a situation.

To make these rules come alive a bit, let’s analyze a story in English, and try to identify whether each past tense expression would use the preterite or imperfect. First, we’ll do it together, then you’ll try to do it yourself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaJUfeP4urs Now it’s your turn to try!
Here are the answers:
Little Pigs Solutions
Module 6
Now that you’ve had a glimpse at the rules for these two tenses, the best way to understand and improve your use of them is to learn from examples and try to identify why the native speaker used the tense he or she used. Before we get to that point, let’s go through the rules for conjugating the imperfect tense. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtb3VavbBv8 -ar verbs: Singular –aba, abas, aba Plural – ábamos, abais, aban -er/ir verbs: Singular – ía, ías, ía Plural- íamos, íais, ían Did you notice that yo and el/ella/usted have the same conjugations? This is true of every verb, even irregulars! Since they overlap, most of the time they’ll use the subject pronoun, unless it has previously been introduced in an earlier sentence. Now let’s have you practice some verb conjugations. We’ll start with my description of two people, since the verbs I use to describe them in the present tense would become imperfect verbs if I were describing people that I used to know. First, watch it as is in the present tense to refresh your memory: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365695/learn/Live-Reading-Verbs Now, try conjugating some of these verbs in the imperfect: http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365695/learn/Random-Imperfect-Tense-Conjugation Now, watch this again, and imagine which verbs I would have used if I were talking about people I used to know. Feel free to pause it often to think it through! http://www.instreamia.com/videos/365695/view Okay, now let’s review some videos we had learned from earlier now that we know what the imperfect is! As you watch, try to identify why either the preterite or imperfect tense was used. http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351154/learn/Live-Reading-Verbs http://www.instreamia.com/videos/188320/learn/Live-Reading-Verbs http://www.instreamia.com/videos/90603/learn/Live-Reading-Verbs http://www.instreamia.com/videos/335912/learn/Live-Reading-Verbs http://www.instreamia.com/videos/324798/learn/Live-Reading-Verbs
Module 7
Time to review a lot of concepts we’ve studied so far! This video uses almost every grammar principle we’ve explained so far. Let’s start of by watching it, then do a bunch of exercises with it, then you’ll watch it again and see how much you understand! http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Live-Reading http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Flashcard-Reading-Verbs http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Flashcard-Production http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Flashcard-Writing http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Random-Preterite-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Random-Present-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Random-Imperfect-Tense-Conjugation http://www.instreamia.com/videos/351157/learn/Live-Listening
